You've landed, everyone around you is already texting, and your phone is stubbornly quiet. Take a breath — almost every eSIM hiccup comes down to one of three cases, and most of them resolve in under a minute. Find yours below and work through it.
The QR code won't scan
Cameras get fussy in bad light. Move somewhere brighter, hold the phone steady, and give it a second to focus. If the code is on a screen, turn that screen's brightness all the way up.
Trying to scan the code with the same phone you're installing it on? That's the classic catch — a phone can't scan its own display. Open the email on a laptop, a tablet, or a travel companion's phone and scan from there.
And if scanning simply refuses to cooperate, you never actually need it: every phone lets you add an eSIM by typing the activation details manually in its settings. The full steps, manual option included, are in our step-by-step installation guide.
The plan won't activate
An eSIM needs a brief internet connection to finish installing — a few minutes on any Wi-Fi network, airport included, is enough.
Once it's installed, two quick checks in your phone's settings:
- The travel plan line is turned on.
- Mobile data is enabled for the travel plan line — and that line, not your home number, is the one selected for data.
That second check solves more "it won't activate" cases than everything else combined.
No signal after landing
Flip airplane mode on, count to five, flip it off. That nudges your phone into a fresh search for local networks, and it's the single most effective fix there is.
Still nothing? Go into your network settings and pick a local network manually instead of waiting for automatic selection. And double-check that the travel plan line is switched on — a long flight is exactly when a stray tap turns it off.
Lost the QR code entirely?
No stress. Head to find my eSIM, enter the email you bought with, and your eSIM details are back in front of you in moments.
